    Quick Notes 5/7

    1. My project is an audio to visual interactive installation meant to prompt users to be as loud as they can in support of their community (aka sports team).

    2. Big findings during the evolution of my process.

    1. People are not as observant as I gave them credit for before I started my project

    2. People find comfort in large groups to perform “attention-calling” actions.

    3. It is hard to stop people to interact with a project when there are tickets and a time constraint involved.

    3. My project is different than the already existing audio to visual interactive installations during a sporting event because it transfers data instantaneously, is in real-time, and is a TRUE direct correspondence of audio and visual.

    Prototypes Galore

    1) Pollution detection in Cairo, Egypt & New York City.

Comparing the two dirtiest cities I have experienced.

Who in DT has a pollution detector? I heard about it somewhere but can’t remember who.

I found these different kind of gas detectors that could help me create a data visualization of the pollution. http://www.futurlec.com/Gas_Sensors.shtml

I’m thinking perhaps a dual lamp installation that illuminates on which city has a higher pollution reading at the time.

Or a doll that makes a coughing noise everytime the pollution readings increase by a certain margin in either city.

    2) Here is a prototype for a trash can that would tell you the level of trash that is currently in the can equates to what year in history’s average.

So say your trash was 40% full. The can would tell you “Reached the average of the 1970’s”. This will help people realize just how much we throw out daily. Perhaps it would inspire users to recycle or reuse their trash.

    3) Here is an idea I worked on a little last semester that I really would like to manifest. Below are some pictures of an interactive installation I imagine outside of MSG in NYC. It is an exploration of human interaction with their clothing & sporting attire/environment.

This is an OpenFrameworks installation that I have working, but I would want to add new elements to the interaction to make it more like a game.

From this idea came an idea to make an interactive hat or t-shirt with the Pulse-Sensor.

    Pulse-a-tune

    Pulse-a-tune!

Pulse-a-tune is my first iteration of my explorations of electronics combined with music. A new toy prototype to light up your room depending on how your body reacts to the music being played.

A convenient tool for parties or relaxing evenings to save you the hassle of finding the right way to light your night.

    User < 75 BPM = Blue/Purple

    105 BPM > User > 75 BPM = Red

    User > 105 BPM = Strobe Light

When can we be expecting the release of the alternate version, “Tuna-pulse”?

    Midterm 2nd Iteration

Here is a video of my second iteration of the midterm.

I have made the project tangible and have completed one of the stages.

I am having trouble getting the colors to adjust between the different pulse readings. So when some one goes from relaxed to energetic music the colors aren’t as smooth of a transition as I was hoping for. Hopefully I can polish this out by Monday.

    Midterm Sketches

So for my midterm project I want to construct a light system that will react to the people that are within a confined space. Instead of having to set mood lighting or buy different types of bulbs for certain types of parties, events or even just daily use you can buy my one product and be covered for any occasion.

Below is a sketch of what it will look like. The Computer is set up to the Arduino and a set of headphones so the user can feel as if they are connected to the machine and enhance their experience (for now). I will later power the light separately with a 9v but for now it will be powered by the computer.

The Arduino sits beneath the light and it will be programmed to take the pulse of the user and interpret that into an appropriate light display. So for instance the user has had a rough day, comes home, put on Radioheads “Nude” and sips a glass of wine their pulse will go from a rapid rate to a very subdued and relaxed state. In which case my lights will react with an ambient mesh of blues, purples, and dull yellow tones. This will help the user relax as well as light their room according their mood without them having to get up and find an appropriate light bulb or brightness level.

Here are the 3 songs that I will use the help achieve the most effective results.

Relaxed pulse rate:  Radiohead – “Nude”

Active pulse rate:   Avicii – “Levels”

Highly Active pulse rate: Every Time I Die – “Cities and Years”

    New Speaker Troubleshoot

Here is another demo of the speaker trouble I am having.

I upgraded resistors from 10K to 330. Let me know what you think about this. I could be getting just fine readings, but am just being thrown off by the Processing visualizer.

    Known Challenges/Unknown Challenges

My midterm started with a rough patch. The pulse sensor I received wasn’t of the best caliber. I believed the problem was that the sensor was sending bad signals to the processing sketch. After discussing the problem with Yuri one evening after class I was given an extra pulse sensor to see if that was what was going wrong. The signals I was getting became stronger and the resemblance of a heart beat started to become clearer. However, it took me quite a while to troubleshoot the remaining disturbance in the signal.

I knew that getting the clearest signal would be tough, but I didn’t think for it to be a piece of equipment that was skewing my data. My steps went from simplifying wiring, to splitting up the equipment’s wiring to separate breadboards, to replacing all pieces with backup parts, to replacement of arduino, to a complete reiteration of coding.

My project means to be an ambient LED display reader of ones heartbeat while listening to various music genres. Although the audio…. to be continued

Easter Egg Experiences? Came upon a jewel of information

Not all equipment should be taken for granted. I expect the equipment to be working at the highest level when in reality I paid a minor sum for it, and in return received the quality I paid for.

    Pulse Sensor Troubleshooting

So as you know I have had an extremely hard time getting the Pulse Sensor to cooperate with my computer (much like Mike).

I do believe I have found the largest source of my problem though. The speakers that we purchased from SparkFun severely interferes with the PulseSensor signals. I have a few videos that I will post demonstrating the trouble that the speakers gives me.

When playing a single tone in unison with the LED everything is fine, but as soon as you step up the complexity of the speaker all hell breaks loose and the sensor goes into a frenzy.

Did adding the 300 ohm (what you had on hand) resistor to the speaker help with the noise level of the PS reading? Ideal resistor for the 0.25w 80ohm speaker is 100ohm resistor for Arduino. But 300 ohms will work, it will just make the sound more dim.

I dedicate this post to all of the people that doubted me in Major Studio.

I would also like to point out that I am the 3rd homework post out of all of you. BOYA!

    LED Box

What I found most challenging for this project was getting my individual  functions to loop once the function was called upon. I had a hard time figuring out how to order my functions and to get them to act as an individual function instead of take on elements of others while performing. I knew the problem lay in my coding so it was mostly a guess and check system during its building process.

I am still struggling with adding characteristics to my functions. I cant seem to get the code to perform certain actions within the function without jeopardizing the entire functionality of the segment.

However, I am proud of the way my box cam out. Its a simple, clean and very effective way of presenting the LED lights. It looks great when lite up in a dark room.

I’m in this class because physical computing was my weakness coming into this semester. I see the importance of this skill, especially moving into the future, and want to become better at it.

My favorite childhood toy was an large empty cardboard box that I could make into a space ship, house, sports stadium, club house etc.
