    Final: Whac-A-Mole

I made a toy, Whac-A-Mole. It is two players game toy. One player controls the mole up and down via iPhone, another player hits the mole with a paper mallet. When you successfully hit the mole, it makes a sound. The players play against; one player try to hit the mole and make a sound, but another player tricks. This idea came from class lessons: automata, servo, blue tooth shield, and xcode.

Final project – 3 role prototype (ideas)

    1. Clock (LEDs + sound) + iphone control

Clock LEDs light up and sound plays if you set up a time by your iPhone device. You can turn on and off lights and sounds by controlling your iphone. You can use this as a lamp too!

    1. One thing you found surprising about making your project.
Before I actually made my paper automata, I spent many hours planning out. First, I deeply thought about concept, emotional response, and user’s action. Then, I studied our textbooks very carefully, and searched for automata I can apply to my project. I made a “Diarrhea Boy” based on Penguin and Peak-a-Bear automata from books. There is cut-out paper food. If the foods are close to the diarrhea boy, he has to “got to go”. I used servo and ultrasonic rangefinder to recognize user’s actions.

    2. One thing you really like about your project.
My project was a success that the “Diarrhea Boy” carried humor. While making it at D12, people stopped by and laughed. I had much fun making it.

    3. One thing you think is unique or important about your project.
I believe the most important essence of toy is fun, and that is why I love toy. My project is for everyone we all can laugh while play with it because we all understand this critical moment. 🙂

    6 Paper Automata concepts

    1) Dancer Automata
Toy dances by user’s clapping sounds
    Emotions: Joy, happy
    Keywords: Electret microphone amplifier, servo

    http://papermau.blogspot.com/2012/11/gangnam-style-machine-automata.html

    2) Welcoming Robot
Create a robot that recognizes you, and it welcomes you. When you get home, he will be coming to you and lighting on his eyes to welcome you. He is just like your own pet, but no needs to feed or walk out.
    Keywords: RangeFinder, servo, LEDs, speaker
    Emotions: Comfort, friendless
    Based on “Tea-serving robot”

    3) Nodding toy
This toy agrees every single things what you say by nodding his/her head. You can say whatever you want. He/she never disagree with you! Even you get angry, he or she will always there for you and listen whatever you have left to say.
    Emotions: comfort, friendless
    Keywords: LEDs, Electret microphone amplifier

    4) Blooming flowers in vase
The flowers in vase notify your facebook, text messages, any notifications on your phone. The flowers bloom as hearing dedicated phone vibration or sound notifications. Each flowers bloom per notification. Therefore, you can get notifications without looking at your small phone screen. The flowers in vase could work as a decoration piece or notification of text messages.
Keywords: notification, servo, Electret microphone amplifier
    Based on Peek-a-bear

    5) A everyday valentine flower
Create a flower if you get closer, it blooms and has nice smells. Also, it changes color each days, so you feel like you have different flower every day.
    Emotions: positive
    Keywords: RangeFinder, LEDs, servo

    6) Lamp
Some people change their moods based on lights. There is a lamp it has available to recognize daytime or nighttime based on amount of lights.
    Emotions: Positive
    Keywords: LEDs, light sensor

Control it will an Arduino Mini, Servo, Ultrasonic Rangefinder, and Battery Power

My third paper automata assignment was “Weight of Bureaucracy” from book, Models that Move. I was super fun automata, but it took more than 6 hours to actual making the paper automata. The challenge part was the servo has to turn only one way, otherwise the paper automata is broke. So, I had to carefully observe ultrasonic rangefinder values and calculate servo position for  the value in code. Using an Arduino Mini and an battery power were simple and easy.

Controlling your servo with via computer

The first paper craft project assignment about controlling your servo with via computer. The goat head turns to left and right  and speed changes according to the scaled value in code.

    Free Writing

    1. What did you find surprising difficult in the this Embedded Arduino Paper Automata project?
First, the difficult and challenge in this Automata project was putting everything (paper automata, Arduino, and servo) together as an object on a board. My second project, Robot has to be move(travel) with a servo together. It was challenge to put the servo into the Robot, because the servo is heavier than the actual paper automata. Secound, my first goat project and my third project, the Weight of Bureaucracy, turn only one way. If it turns another way, the wheels broke. Therefore, I had to be very careful calculating servo number in coding because the middle number is not always 90.

    2. What did you find surprisingly easy?
Working on coding in class was a huge help for assignments. Because I am beginner in coding, I was nervous about breaking when I test out my automates but, Arduino cook book and the class lessons made easier to make them happen.

    3. Did you get inspired with any derivative works for doing this project?
Classmates works inspired me. Adiel’s automata works were impressed, and he pushed the book automata to new level. Also, I think these initial basic lessons and prototypes will give me stronge foundation to make something great in the future.

    BIO POST

    1. What is your academic and professional background?
I have a BFA in graphic and interactive design. After graduating, I have worked as a designer/art director in several companies in several cities.

    2. What motivated you to take this class?
My first physical computing experience was in CCLab class last semester. The p-comp experience gave me new perspective in art. I love it, and I want to continue learning it. Last semester, I made a pillow with p-comp for my first major studio final project. It was hard for me because I never had a intro p-comp class, so I decided to take this class to expand my knowledge. Also, my parents own kindergarten schools since when I was born, toys were always surround me, and I love them.

    3. What is your favorite childhood toy?
I love cute and cozy stuffed animals. When I was in 3rd grade, my uncle brought a gorilla toy that moves by hand clapping sounds. That was my first interactive toy I had play with. I thought that gorilla toy was the coolest toy on earth.

    4. What is your favorite thing to play with these days?
My favorite toy in these day is my macbook with internet. However, I am very interested in physical objects that interactives by human’s emotions.
