    Victor Kim Final Post

Don Music is a audio/visual performance that utilizes a MaxMSP patch to trigger Sesame Street video samples in a musical way.  It is also the stepping stone for more a/v performances.

    Here is my final paper

All my research for this project can be found from March 24th onward:

    New Shtuff

so The only advancements are that I know I’ll be using a few Ray Kurzweil talks juxtaposed with this talk by Dan Beuttner where he says we can’t just take pills or go on diets that will make us live longer.

    The sequencer is 70% working.

I might need to add a few more sample banks.

    that is all

    AIIIGHT

for May  09 – Final Presentation.  Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight… get down tonight.

for May  05 – finish rough draft, fine tune videos/sound, rehearse,

for May  02 – user testing, fill in a bit of final paper sections, fine tune videos/sound, rehearse

for April 28 – user testing, plan out final paper sections, collect more videos, master sound and fine tune timing, rehearse

for April 25 – User testing, get Kickstarter page up with updated demo video, come up with theme for video samples, start collecting videos, plan out “storyline”/song structure of the performance

for April 21 – plan out short presentation, work out pad kinks, add playback speed and step sequencer functionality

“Video Sampler” performance Prior Art *edit*

So my idea is inspired by my own attempts at recreating Lasseg Gjertsen’s pseudo drum machine videos.  While editing my own video I kept thinking to myself how much easier it would be if I just had a video sampler/drum machine instead of cutting up a video and plotting music on a timeline (Final Cut) that is not optimized for sequencing a beat.

so beginning with what my performance is not, here is a VJ (video jockey) set from VJ Fader.  he is controlling visuals to accompany a DJ/artists performance.

it is more akin to the MPC performances by Araab Muzik and Jeremy Ellis

    Musical Cigarettes

    http://vimeo.com/22066071

This was inspired by the youtube hit “Amateur” by Lasser Gjertsen.  It is my first “prototype” (rough video edit) of the notion of mundane, everday habits as musical instruments.

    Autobots, ROLE Out

    Get it?

    anyways

So going off my Sex Drugs & Rock and Roll object I decided to focus on one object.

The different interactive characteristics of a cigarette box can be mapped to different sounds.  A pack of smokes naturally makes rhythmic sounds.  What sounds can be mapped so the interactions aren’t changed from a habitual smoker? A slide whistle for sliding a cigarette out? A muted trumpet for opening the pack? Drums for packing the box?

My big question still remains in what medium to present this.  perhaps a short film to fake this act.  I dunno if I can actually make this.

What was the easiest thing and what was the hardest thing about these prototypes?

I think I am still struggling to figure out what I want to do for this project, so the hardest part was deciding which ideas i wanted to prototype. It was easy to mock it up, but for the most part, I am not happy with any of my ideas so another hard part is living with my ideas for this class.

I like my ideas I have come up with and they bring up a smile, but they are not necessarily projects i want to pursue and include in my portfolio upon graduation.

    Victor’s RPG (Role Prototype

    1. Reverse Incognito Adult Toys.  In this example the user is using a telescope that is disguised as a penis enlarger pump to view the cosmos.  this can also be a vibrator.  other ideas would be a porno dvd case that would be a a cigarette/cigar case or nicotine patches hidden in condom wrapper.

    2. Musician Cam is an easy to use and wearable camera that would display a musician’s point of view during a live show.

    3. Smart Spray Paint Coozy wraps around your spray can and alerts you when cops are near by

    4. Mid-Day Nap Preventor shocks you if you fall asleep during the day

    5. Smart(Ass) Ashtray collects environmental data  and tells you how many days you’re shaving off your life

    6. Turntable Diagnostic is module that tells you what’s wrong with your turntable.

    “temperature” sensor graph

(note: “temperature” because I still need to adjust my thermometer, so for this example I was using light sensor.  a light sensor may be used for the final iterations)

sensor values are plotted to randomly plotted circles’ color.  over time this will create a collage of (hopefully) consistent colors.  If the temperature sensor is moved around to different climates then it won’t be a consistent color.  if I add a light sensor, it’ll get variance from the lights in my room being turned and off. so in theory i should get a nice collage of complimentary colors.
