My favorite childhood toy was definitely the Talkboy as seen in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," which I can really relate to these days. Anyway, the company also sold a Talkgirl that was pink but I liked the silver one better so I had the Talkboy. It was basically a recorder that you could use to modulate your voice and in the movie Kevin McCallister was able to fool a lot of stupid adults using this — it was the coolest.

I received a BFA in photography and a Technology, Arts and Media certificate through the University of Colorado at Boulder (near where SparkFun is located! woohoo). I have dabbled with interactive video and installation and have also done a few projects involving Arduino. I really like working with it and want to expand my knowledge and experience with the program so that is why I am in the class.

Additionally, I have some new ideas for toys that are fun and educational for children with type 1 Diabetes. I’m thinking of making a series of plush food objects that have a sound box triggered by a button that says how many carbohydrates are in that food. Like a plush apple would say ’15 Carbohydrates’ when you pushed the button, etc. Type 1 Diabetes, if you don’t know, is completely about carb-counting and can be difficult when you are learning. I’m still struggling to know all the math.

Also, in the past my projects with Arduino were very experimental and hap-hazard design-wise. Through this course, I would like to improve my design, both aesthetically and functionally speaking.
