About Me and my favorite toy

Hi all! I’m Maya, I got my BFA in photography and BA in Art History at the University of Colorado Boulder. As of right now I don’t have much of a ‘professional’ career to speak of, I was a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to college and just graduated from undergrad last year and moved straight to NYC with the intention of going to Parsons. I love to make things, in the past I’ve experimented with jewelry, sewing, sculpture, and of course darkroom photography so I’m hoping this class will give me the hands on experience that I love.

These are my favorite childhood toy. They are battlebeasts. I had my parents send me photos of the remainders, we had many more but they’ve been lost over the years. These probably came out some time in the early 80’s and are about the size of your pinky. Monkey Man is their leader!!

One of these things is not like the other

    Hey all,

I’m the Transdisciplinary Design student, here to suck out all the good DT juice from your brains.  And if you give me half an hour, I’m happy to describe my program to you.

About me:  I’ve lived in NYC for 9 years, I come from a photo/video background, and I’m very curious about roughly everything.

Favorite toy:  The Glow Worm.  Probably my very first toy, and perfect.  Soft, warm, and lights up when you squeeze it.  What more would you want?

I did, yes, but apparently there are still some issues with my program and registering. Let me check in with my advisor and see what the trouble is. (sorry!)

    intro

I’ve decided I want to master the arduino as a tool for creating interactive, tangible interfaces and objects.
I have few plans, concepts (and dreams!) ready that I’d like to have the ability and knowledge to develop independently.

Other than that, I enjoy working on code, I love the tiny hardware and messing with electronics.

      Simon Says

Me and a friend used to play the Super Mario together.
The game could not be saved, so we used to play as one player for hours (!) in turns.

    Jun Sik (Jason) Kim Introduction

    Background / Why I’m here

I’m really looking forward to attending Physical Computing 1 and playing around with Arduino. I have a background in industrial design. Until now, I’ve been designing products as an undergrad and participated in projects that collaborated with Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc. in Korea. But there was only so much I could do because I did not have a clear notion towards the engineering part of design. I wanted to study how products worked and what limitations they had. As I studied industrial design, I also became more and more interested in communications and medias of communication. I really wanted to create a new means of communication and take it to the next level between user and device. I believe it critical to increase the role of interactivity in products for the future. I worked for three months in Korea in a design consulting firm that solved problems using design methodologies before coming to MFADT. Because I want to create a new platform for communication, I want to learn the basics of physical computing so that I can later on incorporate it into my thesis. I believe all designers should understand at least the basics of coding and physical computing as these serve as the basics necessary to create products these days. With the open source community ever increasing, coding and physical computing can only get more fun. I’m eager to see what I can learn!

    Favorite Toy

My favorite childhood toy – although it is very tempting to say that it is the Lego — is called Granzort. It comes from a Japanese cartoon called Granzort. I used to love this cartoon and figure toy when I was in elementary school. While trying to look for pictures of Granzort in the internet, my heart started to flutter again! I love this toy!

It is basically a toy that reshapes itself once a person enters the body of the robot (in the cartoon). The robot then kills of the bad robot – just like any other cartoon. But what was so special about this robot was that people would actually enter the robot through a beam of light and the movement of the person would parallel the movement of the robot. The robot moved exactly the same way the controller moved.

The whole transformation of the robot and the relationship between controller and robot made my jaws drop with fascination at a young age. I will never forget this toy. I would bring it with me everywhere I went. I would always reshape the toy and imagine myself being inside the toy controlling the robot.

Here is a Youtube link of the cartoon.

:::RBBB – Really Bare Bones Board – Freeduino – Arduino-Compatible:::

While putting together my first MapDuino, I was wondering if there may be a less messy way  and also a visual guide to identify  where the different pins are located when  connecting all the components together and later when connecting the rest of the circuit to Mapduino. I met Zach and Nate from ITP this weekend and this is what they recommended. They just ordered some for the first time so did not  know how reliable this boards are. Though they seem they would be a great option for Lilipad and an easier way to assemble your MapDuino.

    Anyways, here is the info:

"This is a mini board designed for those experimental applications
that require small processors, such as wearable computing, near space
experiments, toy prototyping, artist's projects or any use for a fairly
    small microcontroller."

    RBBBrevB_3bds_300

they also sell kits and assembled/tested RBBBs

    Time pieces

    1. Online projects

John Cage: 4'33'' for piano (1952)

Musique piece that lasts for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. The piece is silent. Time sets the rhythm, and is t the major component of the music.

A beautifully orchestrated chain reaction with common objects. Each elements gives life to the next one.
    2. Projects from books

    Marepe: "Veja Meu Bern" (2007)

    Sc00065e92

Displacement is an important element of this piece. Created to last only two days at Tate Modern's turbine hall, it illustrates the ambiance of a brazilian funfair.

    Cai Guo-Qiang: "Head on" (2006)

    Sc00077ac6

"My installations have consistently pursued a temporal fluidity, in contrast to the stylistic freedom I allow myself. However, my works in essence contain these characteristics: a participatory nature and a flow of time".
    Cai Guo-Qiang
    3. Toy Fair

    Fascinations

    Sc00081093

Although I really don't like its black box design, I enjoyed the system on this clock displaying time and messages in the air. Using persistence of vision, the clock appeared magical.

This design doesn't include technology, but it is a smart way for girls to develop their creativity, power of decision and their taste.
The cute little dress form comes with a plain white dress, and then girls pick up fabrics and accessories to create their princess dress.
