Final: Role Prototype
I would like to develop further from my midterm look & feel prototype of Bowman. This time, you can use your smartphone to control Bowman to bow at you via bluetooth.

Final project – 3 role prototype (ideas)
1. Clock (LEDs + sound) + iphone control
Clock LEDs light up and sound plays if you set up a time by your iPhone device. You can turn on and off lights and sounds by controlling your iphone. You can use this as a lamp too!
2. Fashion shirt + LED + iphone control
Controlling a lot, some, or one LED(s) on clothe by using a iPhone device. Decorate your shirt whatever you want anytime and anywhere. Write letters, make shapes, and/or patterns.
3. Amal toy(automata) that roller skating, able to control by iphone. cute!

Role and Look/Feel Prototype for Final
I want to make a series of dirty little robots for the final.
They are constructed of metal scrap found on the city streets, old record covers, and electronic components.
Their role is to sort out human thoughts in a robotish way, bring quirky little joy to the overloaded human minds
of city people. In this kind of manifestation the negative stuff of your overloaded mind is gone.How it works:
You open the app and type words about what’s in your troubled mind.
As soon as you click “that’s it”, all the little robots move into action as a
composition to interoperate/translate your words…some blink, some
walk, some roll, some make noise, bla bla bla…… What the robots
actually do is XXXXXX. The time they do it depends on the length of
the words you typed.Why I chose the material that I chose:
1. Worn out stuff has a natural soothing function.
It has solid psychological background.2. Metal scrap comes from the New York City streets.
If the dirty little robots bring you positive feelings, it’s
like the tension/anxiety/worries of you brought by
New York City can also be cured by New York City.
How romantic.3. Old record covers has a very long history/memory
of music and the people who loved them.

Building Cubicles by Daniela & Youmna
One thing you found surprising about making your project?
We decided to build a set of mini cubicles all embedded into one single structure, a building. We wanted to have different characters living in there. The piece is like a small scale installation in which the public interacts with it in two ways: In an analog form (the public manually opens various doors in order to see the characters) and the second interactions comes from sensors. Once they open the doors, the characters react to the person’s presence and they start to do something.
During the building of one of the characters, I researched about different ways for making the gears and cams and the whole structure to move the way I envisioned it and surprisingly it was extremely hard. Surprisingly because even I have been practicing with different gears and cams and structures with the other paper toys, when I started playing with other materials such as chipboard I encountered naturally new challenges. I had to built three structures before I got one working the way I wanted it to work and still it is not completely functioning as good as I want it to function.
One thing you really like about your project?
I really like our aesthetics choice. I am very happy with the way our characters turned out and the look and feel that the materials we used give. We wanted for the piece to look animated, comic like, funny and unique. I think by using chipboard and combining it with thread and different textures we achieved the sketchy look we were looking for.
One thing you think is unique or important about your project?
I think the fact that we put both our automates (the characters) in a a building, having them live somewhere makes it unique. We really wanted for them to be shown in their cubicles and I am glad we did achieve that.

Midterm thoughts
The one thing that I found surprising, not in the most positive way, was the difficulty to adapt a movement to what I actually wanted to do. My idea was that the cow would conceal its utters with its arms, and then flash you once you approached. However, my lack of time to keep trying for this mechanism to be accurate resulted in a movement I am not convinced still.I guess one thing I really like about my project is the general idea. I do think its a cool concept having a cow flash at you, but I believe this could be much improved. I originally though of making it a kind of cabaret cow, which I still think would make the concept have a stronger context and hence, a more direct message. Right now, since the movement is inaccurate and the cow is just a simple cow, it is difficult for anybody to see what I meant with it.
I think that one thing that makes my project unique is the fact that I am using a simple mechanism and trying to create a story with it. Even though the mechanism does not work as I visualized it, I still believe my project could be capable of telling a story upon a direct and simple crank.

Midterm Automa Sketches
I. Twitter Bird
For this concept instead of a sensor I would want to get data from Twitter. It would ideally hang from the ceiling above your desk and anytime someone tweets to you it bobs up and down and flaps it’s wings.
II. Scared Hedgehog
This is inspired from my hedgehog Dexter who is scared of everything. It would be built like the robot and whenever it sensed anyone around it would put up spikes and try to run away.
III. Weather Forecast
This would be like the duck pond automa and connect to some form of a weather API and rotate to a regular servo that rotates to the correct weather symbol for the day.
IV. Brain Waves
I did a lot of work with the Mind Flex last semester and wanted to maybe use it again. I have no idea honestly how this one would be constructed but I would want it to look like one of the orbs you see at science museums and the waves from the center move while you’re concentrating.
V. Instagram
This would be similar to the twitter one and whenever someone likes one of your Instagrams a little desk hipster puts on glasses. It would work similar to the peek-a-boo bear.
VI. Morning Glory
When trying to think of a natural object that is different during the day than it is during the night I thought of the morning glory that blooms only during the day and closes at night. This would sit by a window and use a photosensor.

The flowers in vase notify your facebook, text messages, any notifications on your phone. The flowers bloom as hearing dedicated phone vibration or sound notifications. Each flowers bloom per notification. Therefore, you can get notifications without looking at your small phone screen. The flowers in vase could work as a decoration piece or notification of text messages.

Create a flower if you get closer, it blooms and has nice smells. Also, it changes color each days, so you feel like you have different flower every day.

1-What did you find surprising difficult in the Embedded Arduino Paper Automata project?
Even though I’ve had some practice with building paper toys with the last two projects, this one in particular was very hard. The construction of the automata, the Weight of Bureaucracy, was very challenging. The pieces were very small and even though in the book everything is explained very well still there’s a lot of logic and attention that needs to be applied in order for the automata to work well in the end. Also, even though all the pieces one need to construct it are there in the book, I found helpful to be creative and change one or two pieces in order to make it function. All of this helps a lot for understanding the mechanics and system that goes behind it.
As for the technical part with the micro Arduino, servo motor, Ultrasonic range finder and the battery it took more time than before to make it all work. The reading of the micro Arduino was inconstant. My UBS port for some reason kept loosing it after a while. I had some technical issues with this and it took patience and trying repeatedly to make it work. It seemed to confuse it with Leonardo Arduino. It was frustrating and still is.
Also making the structure to present everything neatly and to hide the board, motors, cables, battery, etc was challenging too. The solution was to have a mini box underneath a platform where the model and a mini box with the servo hidden is next to it.
And last but not least the code was challenging too for me because it is somewhat new to me. Figuring out the values and how the paper automata responded to the movement of the servo was hard.
2-What did you find surprisingly easy?
The wiring, making the circuits since I am now familiar with these two the range finder and servo motor. Also getting the power from the battery.
3- Did you get inspired with any derivative work from doing this project?
Overall these last three projects have been very inspiring and instructive. A good practice in construction with paper. I’ve been thinking about how to make them with a collage of materials and embedding different electronics. I think also the knowledge and practice of understanding the mechanics behind these paper automatas is helpful for a lot of things in design in general. Production of artifacts and of course physical computing. And also makes you aware of the huge potential paper has.
