Background I’m a junior BFA DT student from Sao Paulo, Brazil. My professional background is in product design and I have experience in film and production.

I joined this class to begin working towards robotics from a design perspective.

My favorite childhood toys were the Warhammer game and making it’s characters.

    hello world!

Hey, I’m Mónica. I’m a second year MFA D+T candidate, and I come from an Advertising/Graphic Design background. I studied the equivalent of Visual Communications in Dominican Republic (yes, I’m one of the girls with an accent). In my first semester, during my CCLab class I was introduced to Arduino and physical computing. Since I was learning, I tried to incorporate it to projects across my classes. I LOVED IT. I’ve always been a sucker for wires and electronics, so this felt natural to do. For a year now, most of my projects have involved PComp, just knowing the basics. Now I finally decided to signed up for this class and take it one step further.

And here you can see my favorite childhood toy: Tamagotchi (I think). I was a very hyperactive kid, so I was always playing with something different every week, BUT this is the one I remember having the most fun and spending hours feeding my little baby dinosaur, so it must have had some impact on me.

    Aneta: “Hello!”

My name is Aneta and my background is in fashion and accessory design, but I am a semi geek at heart. This class is perfect for me because I’d like to start incorporating physical computing into the accessories I am making.

When I was little I loved taking apart and rebuilding everything around me.

I can’t think of a specific toy but I loved sewing little clothes for my dolls and my grandma’s sewing machine was definitely one of my favorites. Actually she had a few singer machines. One looked pretty much like this one,

And another one looked like this oen:

    intro + favourite toy

    Background

Hello! My name is Rachel, and I’m originally from Singapore. I grew up in HongKong for 7 years, moved back to Singapore for secondary/highschool, then moved to China for 6 months for internship, then to Japan for another 3 months and finally settled in University of Melbourne, Australia for bachelor degree majoring in media studies.

In terms of work experience I’ve done quite a lot of legal (and some barely legal) jobs,  mostly because I started exhibiting (fine arts) when I was 16 and needed the money for shows/supplies. My foundation is in fine arts, particularly classical oil painting then photography in university and finally to performance and digital interactive art.

NYC has so far been pretty cool, and last week I tried my first funnel cake!!! I plan to try all American foods while I’m here

    My Interest in this Class

Even though I have a bit of experience with physical computing, I feel like there’s lots of learn more and also I really want to learn it properly instead of being half-baked about it. Mostly I really like physical computing and circuitry, and it just seems wonderful to be able to create these little toys – almost gifts, that can make people feel happier. It’s like, I don’t know why but the idea of having a blinking LED pin is both cute and cool and whoa awesome, you just can’t help but think it’s wonderful. I’ll like to be able to learn the skills to make these things  so that other people can enjoy them.

     Favourite Toy(s)

I’m hypoallergic to many things; one of them being synthetic hair (esp. in dolls’) so I spent most of my childhood playing Lego with my siblings. Actually we got really good at it and there was a period of time that my sister, brother and I were entering Lego juniors’ competitions as a team to win money.  My favourite type of Lego was called Lego Technic:

After Lego (and to a lesser extent, Tamiya racing) my siblings and I moved on to digital/console games. We pooled our cash together to buy a Playstation when I was 10, and from then onwards it was mostly gaming.  My siblings and I are still gaming addicts though, it seems that you never grow out of childhood only now with a ‘professional’ job you earn more money to buy all the games you want without a parent scolding you (hah!)

    Hi

    I’m Josef (by the way)

    A)   BS/MS

    B)   I am interested in this class because I would like to create in depth and technical projects. More importantly, I would like to immerse myself in the culture that surrounds Physical Computing to get a feel for what people are making and what problems people are trying to solve  within their respective fields.

About Me and my favorite toy

Hi all! I’m Maya, I got my BFA in photography and BA in Art History at the University of Colorado Boulder. As of right now I don’t have much of a ‘professional’ career to speak of, I was a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to college and just graduated from undergrad last year and moved straight to NYC with the intention of going to Parsons. I love to make things, in the past I’ve experimented with jewelry, sewing, sculpture, and of course darkroom photography so I’m hoping this class will give me the hands on experience that I love.

These are my favorite childhood toy. They are battlebeasts. I had my parents send me photos of the remainders, we had many more but they’ve been lost over the years. These probably came out some time in the early 80’s and are about the size of your pinky. Monkey Man is their leader!!

One of these things is not like the other

    Hey all,

I’m the Transdisciplinary Design student, here to suck out all the good DT juice from your brains.  And if you give me half an hour, I’m happy to describe my program to you.

About me:  I’ve lived in NYC for 9 years, I come from a photo/video background, and I’m very curious about roughly everything.

Favorite toy:  The Glow Worm.  Probably my very first toy, and perfect.  Soft, warm, and lights up when you squeeze it.  What more would you want?

I did, yes, but apparently there are still some issues with my program and registering. Let me check in with my advisor and see what the trouble is. (sorry!)

    intro

I’ve decided I want to master the arduino as a tool for creating interactive, tangible interfaces and objects.
I have few plans, concepts (and dreams!) ready that I’d like to have the ability and knowledge to develop independently.

Other than that, I enjoy working on code, I love the tiny hardware and messing with electronics.

      Simon Says

Me and a friend used to play the Super Mario together.
The game could not be saved, so we used to play as one player for hours (!) in turns.

    Jun Sik (Jason) Kim Introduction

    Background / Why I’m here

I’m really looking forward to attending Physical Computing 1 and playing around with Arduino. I have a background in industrial design. Until now, I’ve been designing products as an undergrad and participated in projects that collaborated with Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc. in Korea. But there was only so much I could do because I did not have a clear notion towards the engineering part of design. I wanted to study how products worked and what limitations they had. As I studied industrial design, I also became more and more interested in communications and medias of communication. I really wanted to create a new means of communication and take it to the next level between user and device. I believe it critical to increase the role of interactivity in products for the future. I worked for three months in Korea in a design consulting firm that solved problems using design methodologies before coming to MFADT. Because I want to create a new platform for communication, I want to learn the basics of physical computing so that I can later on incorporate it into my thesis. I believe all designers should understand at least the basics of coding and physical computing as these serve as the basics necessary to create products these days. With the open source community ever increasing, coding and physical computing can only get more fun. I’m eager to see what I can learn!

    Favorite Toy

My favorite childhood toy – although it is very tempting to say that it is the Lego — is called Granzort. It comes from a Japanese cartoon called Granzort. I used to love this cartoon and figure toy when I was in elementary school. While trying to look for pictures of Granzort in the internet, my heart started to flutter again! I love this toy!

It is basically a toy that reshapes itself once a person enters the body of the robot (in the cartoon). The robot then kills of the bad robot – just like any other cartoon. But what was so special about this robot was that people would actually enter the robot through a beam of light and the movement of the person would parallel the movement of the robot. The robot moved exactly the same way the controller moved.

The whole transformation of the robot and the relationship between controller and robot made my jaws drop with fascination at a young age. I will never forget this toy. I would bring it with me everywhere I went. I would always reshape the toy and imagine myself being inside the toy controlling the robot.

Here is a Youtube link of the cartoon.
