“The Working with Servo Motors Class”

    Read:  http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/Libraries

    Read: http://arduino.cc/en/reference/servo

Read & Do: SparkFun Inventor Kit, Circuit #8.

    Run Code:  http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/Sweep

    Run Code:  http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/Knob

Rune Code:  Servo parseInt (from class).

Home Work:  Make a creative project/prototype that moves something with the motor.  The motor can be pre-programmed to move in a pattern, a POT, FlexSensor, Soft POT [Exercise 9 & 10 in Sparkfun Book].  Be creative think of what interesting effects you can get when one motor.  You can also use found object, control the trigger of a bubble gun for example.

    Simão Says

    Final video!
A Simon Says-like game, but with a knob instead of buttons. The user has to repeat the sequence of angles, pretty much like a locker.
Thanks Laura SalaberryRenata Miwa and Alessandra Kalko!
Soundtrack: instrumental version of “Amor de Chocolate“, by Naldo.
    Design process here.

P.S.: “Simão” is the portuguese name for Simon. The name of the toy in Brazil is actually “Genius”.

1.What did you find difficult about building your project?

    a. Find the threshold value which defines the status of ON and OFF for photo resistor. The perfect value should be like this: the photo resistor works once I touch it but when I jump between these photo resistors it won’t accidentally trigger any resistors in between.

    b. How to make it interesting for two players. I used to make the rules like this: one player creates and the other one follows. But I found this might be boring for the first player since s/he only needs to remember a sequence. So I improved the rules like this: each player has to both follow and create at one time. This makes both of them highly participate by focusing on what each other creates and remembering former sequence. It would be more challenging and fun.

    c. Distance between each photo resistor. I tried several times to adjust the distance between each sensor, because either closer or further would decrease the experience when people play it.

    d. Improve experience. Currently there are only four photo resistors, which means when one player stands at one side and the other stands at the other side, one of them will cover LED when s/he touches the sensor. So there has to be a way to make it more convenient for people to play.

    e. How to make an enclosure. I want it to look really cool but I’m still figuring it out:(

2.What did you find easy about building your project?

    a. The coding part is not so hard compared to the debugging process.

    b. Building circuit is easy once you have the whole view in your mind.

    3. What surprises you found while building your project?

    a. I felt really surprised and happy that people like to play the two players mode, at least they didn’t think it’s boring.

    b. I’m surprised that laser cutting is really interesting. I kept asking myself why I didn’t go there earlier.

    [homework] simon says

1.What did you find difficult about building your project?

I have not been able to get the code working past stage one ( see video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZf3PwnD0ew ). I have worked for hours and hours and all I seem to be able to do is break my project completely and have to start all over again. It is extremely frustrating.

2.What did you find easy about building your project?

I had a lot of fun thinking about the design of the enclosure. I wanted to adhere the LEDs to the leaves of a fake house plant, and then have pressure sensor pads in color-coordinated roots. However, since I haven’t been able to get the code working at all, I don’t feel like I have the time to put together a well-crafted object.

    3. What surprises found you while building your project?

Getting stuck on this extremely frustrating technical block has really sapped any motivation I had for this project. I feel like I finally have a clear vision of what I want the object to be, but am unable to make any progress whatsoever. I’m giving up on it. I don’t know, I’m sorry but I tried really hard and am at my breaking point with this. I’ll do something better for the final, I feel like putting more effort into this would be pointless.

    About My Simon-Says Game

When making my Simon-Says game, the most difficult thing for me was the coding part. Since to write the code from scratch seems very hard, I took several approaches. I first tried to get some inspiration from other people’s code. But in many cases, their logics are very hard to understand. Then I turned back to review those code examples we got from class and then add elements into them little by little. Through this way, I finally got the ideal function.

The easy part of this project was to build the physical electrocircuit. Making the prototype version took me very little energy. Also I was very lucky to find the bamboo box, so deciding what material to use for enclosure did not bother me.

What surprised me was that to build the final enclosure took me much longer than I expected. I realize that the drill and solder really require practice. To organize the wires inside the box also requires patience and cautiousness. I was very excited when I finally got my Simon works properly.

What did you find difficult about building you project?
Never touched coding before coming to DT, I definitely find the logics of this projects challenging—Simon says and then user react then Simon says again and go on.

And that’s not all. Because just when I though I’d completed the coding and everything works perfectly, and tried to get the game enclosed, I got so frustrated by the new button pad I bought, which I did included in my proposal. I simply want to apply my idea of combing LEDs and button together, but the circuitry is too complex for me to comprehend. Nothing gets more depressing than a formerly perfectly working game failed after transplanting onto the new PCB.

But thanks to Max and some online tutorials, finally everything back to functioning well.

What did you find easy about your project?
Laser cutting turned out easier than I thought, since it was my first using the machine. And I’d definitely love to keep cutting!

What surprise found you while building your project?
I think underestimating the difficulty of using the fancy button pad ended up surprised me really hard. I didn’t have enough time to figure the circuitry out and put everything together before the show day.

1.What did you find difficult about building your project?

    • I found that making wearable toy is more difficult than I thought because I need to put all the sensors, lines, hardware chip and also battery on or in it. It was hard to hide the sensors and also hard to hold Arduino and battery with it.
    • Also, it is hard to make everyone’s profitable size for wearable toys. For me, I made a glove Simon Says and I found the glove size is not affordable for everyone from small hand to big hand.

2.What did you find easy about building your project?

    • The easy to build was I didn’t need to use wood or plastic that is hard to cut and adjust form.
    • Easy to find the materials that I need such as gloves, threads, needle and etc.

    3. What surprises found you while building your project?

    • While building my project, I found wearable toys are harder than I thought! And there is electronic thread I can use for my project which can make to build the project much easier.
    • When I put one pressure sensor, it worked well. However, the sensors didn’t work after put all the sensors.
    • And… I the most surprising part was that I found I’m not that interested in wearable things.. maybe next time, I will build another Simon Says with another way.

    1) What did you find difficult about building you project?
Coding is definitely hard to me. Soohyun helped me a lot. However, I soon realized that putting all of stuffs together was the hardest thing I encountered. For example, how could I connect all the wires to the same ground.

2)What did you find easy about your project?
It was my first time to use laser cut. I learned a lot about it and will use it in the future. Compare to other part, I enjoyed designing and building my enclosure.

3)What surprise found you while building your project?
Basically, everything was surprise to me. Sawing is so difficult and impossible to be done by one person actually. I planed to finished it in one day but it took me double times to make this project.

    1. I didn’t expect it to be difficult to build up the enclosure. I did some DIY projects before and I thought it could also be ‘easy’ this time. But I was totally wrong. It turned out to be so hard when all the wires coming in and they can be totally a disaster. I broke my poor enclosure several times to check or fix the circuits.

I also found it hard to build code level by level as it comes to a certain level, a minor mistake can take long to be fixed. And sometimes it makes me wonder “what I wrote is right, why doesn’t it work?”

    2. Finding material could be easy as everyday disposal could totally be things for my project. Some can be very easy to be ignored but actually very useful. After I finish my project I still feel excited using other material I didn’t use for this time.

A tight schedule could make it easier as well.. I made several breakthroughs and finished the code one day before today..

    3. How can we get material from the daily life surprises me.

what did you find easy about building your project?
what surprises you while building your project?
    (liest at least 2 examples)

#1. the logic for coding part, figuring out the big frame logic is not that difficult, but since the project has to do with so much connection and rule settings( for me ).
#2. designing a content, building circuits, mechanic part of project (soldering.gluing)
#3. there are ways of design to make simon says playful.

What I found must difficult from building the project was finding the time to sit down and go through trial and error slowly. I think I understand what a for loop is but I don’t know how to use it in my advantage. I realizes that for me to understand how to code I need to constantly compare with other codes that do work so I know how to do it. After doing this the assignment was easier to handle because I had a reference. Thing stop working unexpectedly, its something expected but I get surprised every time.

difficult: 1.consider the physical factors inside the design like friction and gravity, speed

    2.lacking of material, like transistor

easy:coding part is fine, and it is also easy to come up with an idea which i want to do

what surprising : wood is easy to laser cutted and gear `s shape has to follow a  equation.
