Presentation
Here’s my look and feel prototype:
Here’s my presentation:
Mini Thesis presentation of my current concept Fermid. An interactive kinetic sculpture that mimics the behavioral changes relating to the emotional reactions of fear.
Timeline
Where I am now:
Using parametric design techniques to create an aesthetic that mimics natural forms and geometric shapes. I want to use servo motors and IR sensors to create the gathering effect.
A lot got done in the past few days for my project including getting multiple sets of xBees talking to each other, nixing the IR component of the project, some experimentation with Resin to coat the balls, two working prototypes, and some real live testers

Also, for anybody who is following along with Tinker, you can grab the latest release here. To upgrade, all you have do to is overwrite the ‘core’ folder with the one that’s included in the zip file. All your settings and user info will remain.
Stay tuned for further updates. By next week I’ll have auto-save drafts and versions!

So I’m making progress on sensor unit and the end device. I’ve slowed the development of the sensor to make sure that it will be working properly and stay working when I finally get it installed. I’ve been working on power management of the arduino and cell phone. I’ve been using some nice code that I found to put my arduino to sleep. Here are two places to look for this.

I cut the first version of the breadboard for the sensor and will have it soldered up for monday.
I also have the pelican case that I’m going to use:
As for the end device, I’ve decided to make a change on how its going to look and work. In thinking about the look and feel of the device I noticed that there was no really good place to install a light in my bathroom. I also noticed that there are light fixtures over my sink that have exposed lightbulbs. I then came up with the idea to create a internet connected lightbulb. The lightbulb can replace any normal bulb in any fixture. This allows people to use their existing light fixtures and removes the need for an addition device in the house. The nature of the design that I came up with also allows for the bulb adapter to be removed and for the device to be plugged directly into a electrical socket.
I ordered all the parts need to build a prototype this weekend.

Not true, my kickstarter was rejected =(
wtf? who wouldn’t want an omnom garbage can?
something must’ve happened, I definitely posted a full schedule before class on Monday…
for May 09 – Final Presentation. Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight… get down tonight.
for May 05 – finish rough draft, fine tune videos/sound, rehearse,
for May 02 – user testing, fill in a bit of final paper sections, fine tune videos/sound, rehearse
for April 28 – user testing, plan out final paper sections, collect more videos, master sound and fine tune timing, rehearse
for April 25 – User testing, get Kickstarter page up with updated demo video, come up with theme for video samples, start collecting videos, plan out “storyline”/song structure of the performance
for April 21 – plan out short presentation, work out pad kinks, add playback speed and step sequencer functionality
for April 18 –
I decided to work on the look and feel and started making my robot plush toy. However, without a sewing machine, it took me forever to sew it. It still does not have eyes or any signs on live on it, but it’s getting there.
So much going on here – plants are growing, fish are going…
Can’t wait to update you all on Thursday.
Below is my schedule for the rest of the semester :
4/18 Implement Filter prototype 1 /Testing / Sensor Prototypes
4/21 Begin Building prototype 2/ Begin Sensor Network
4/25 Implement Filter prototype 2/ All Data to Network
4/28 Paper Writing/ Eating/ Testing
5/2 Paper Writing/ Eating/ Testing
5/5 Paper Writing/ Eating/ Testing
5/9 Presentation
He doesn’t have a name yet but my new toy is heart broken. You keep him company, listen to music with him, talk to him,
dance with him, hug him… help him mend his broken heart.
I have been building him since saturday, non stop. I still couldn’t close him up yet but I made huge progress.
My code is in place as well but, I will most likely modify it based on user testing which I was supposed to start today but unfortunately I need one mpre day to fully establish my enclosure.
Here are many many pics and videos of my new prototype:

Very nice logo Alva!
Looking good, Alvaro! Here’s something I ran across that reminds me of your project:
Keep it up, yo!
Thanks for this Thom. Is really good reference (prior art). I’m working mostly on making those connections right!!

The DEP held a “Green infrastructure” meeting last thursday, which I attended. The concept of the green infrastructure program is to find ways to reduce CSO outfalls by developing alternates to traditional infrastructure. These green initiatives include green roofs, bioswales, and enhanced tree pits to help reduce storm water run-off. There is even a grant program for people to develop these ideas with funding from the DEP, unfortunately the applications are due on the 29th of april. I spoke with several people about my project and got some ideas about how to proceed.

I found this great precedence for my project!
The build is going well I now have a rough prototype to understand the sort of size of container I’ll need. I’ve sent in my proposal to kickstarter and am waiting for approval. I have 1 completed personality of noises that are now triggered by the sensors. My next steps are to finish up the multiple personalities, install OmNom and start ding some testing, design a more finished container to be laser cut, and test, test, test.
April 18
Have all sensors installed and triggering reactions based on the kinds of interactions I’m expecting.
April 21
Have 1 more peronality crafted and a switch to allow the user to change personalities. Install the rough prototype in a waste bin. Have an illustrator file ready for the laser cutter.
April 25
Have done some initial user testing and begin to refine interactions, sounds, and code. Have all Personalities crafted and ready for tweaking. Hopefully have materials cut and read to be assembled for final housing.
April 28
Installed OmNom in new housing and have a OmNom bin setup on the 10th floor for mass user testing.
May 2
More improvements made and 2nd OmNom built and ready for deployment. Rough draft of paper finished. Start collecting all materials for final presentation.
May 5
Paper written and finished. Hopefully have raised gobs of money on kickstarter. Any final minor tweaks made. Presentation 90% finished.
May 9
Final presentation! and then drinks!
More precedence!
Here is a project by a previous MFADT student and garbage cans-but not as awesome as omnom 🙂
